ESD PROTECTION ZONE AND PROTECTIVE MEASURES

ESD PROTECTION ZONE AND PROTECTIVE MEASURES

We show you how to equip your ESD protection zone correctly!

The establishment of an ESD protection zone (Electrostatic Protected Area, EPA), in which ESD-endangered assemblies can be handled safely, requires a comprehensive protection concept. The essential points for this are internal and external protection of the components and organizational protective measures with which employees, visitors, suppliers and customers are actively involved.

COMPONENTS OF AND ESD PROTECTION ZONE

WHICH PROTECTIVE MEASURES ARE NECESSARY?

For successful compliance with an effective ESD protection concept, it is essential to ensure that persons and workplaces within an EPA are always earthed and that components are protected:

PERSONAL GROUNDING: As people are the main sources of electrostatic charge, wearing ESD wristbands, ESD shoes, ESD clothing and ESD gloves is particularly important.
GROUNDING OF THE WORKPLACE: Every workbench or work surface should be covered with ESD material and grounded using cables and ground connections.
PROTECTION OF THE COMPONENTS: The ESD-sensitive components must be stored and transported in antistatic containers or on antistatic mats. Only use tools in ESD-compliant design.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND ORGANISATIONAL ESD-MEASURES

In addition to preventing unwanted charging and controlling safe discharge, it is also important that all components used comply with the latest international standards and that certain administrative measures are taken.

Designation of an ESD coordinator
ESD measuring for monitoring
Introduction or updating of the ESD control programm

ESD RULES OF CONDUCT

Wear and connect the wrist strap when working in a seated position.
Observe handling instructions for electronic components. It is forbidden to place ESD-endangered components on metallic surfaces.
Eating and drinking are prohibited at the electronics workstation. Attention must be paid to order and cleanliness.
Only use suitable cleaning and care products at the EPA.
Report defective and missing ESD protective measures to the ESD coordinator immediately.
Only use containers and packaging suitable for ESD.
Insulating shelves and rechargeable materials are prohibited in the EPA.
