Why is ESD clothing used in EPA areas?
Normal clothing can generate high electrostatic voltages due to friction. ESD clothing reduces this charge build-up through woven-in conductive fibres. As a result, sensitive electronic components are better protected against electrostatic discharge during production, testing or assembly. Typical areas of application are electronics production, SMT lines and manufacturing.
What requirements apply to ESD clothing?
ESD clothing must dissipate electrostatic charges in a controlled manner in accordance with DIN EN 61340-5-1. The decisive factors are conductive fibres, full coverage of normal clothing and regular cleaning without loss of dissipative properties. In many production areas, closed sleeves and conductive cuffs are also required.
What are the differences between ESD gowns, shirts and overalls?
ESD gowns are often used at service and assembly workstations and can be worn flexibly over normal clothing. Shirts are suitable for permanent work in EPA zones and are more comfortable to wear. Coveralls provide full coverage and are often used in sensitive manufacturing or cleanroom areas.
Why do ESD clothing and ESD footwear need to be combined?
ESD clothing alone is not enough if electrostatic charges are not dissipated in a controlled manner. Only the combination of dissipative clothing, ESD footwear and a suitable floor covering enables complete personal earthing within the EPA zone. This reduces voltage differences and uncontrolled discharges.
