What is ESD?
ESD stands for the abbreviation "Electro Static Discharge". This means that ESD can cause an electrical overload on electronic components and damage them. Effective protection against damage caused by electrostatic discharge is provided by ESD protection zones, so-called EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area). In this special protected area, all precautionary measures are taken to enable work with electrostatically sensitive components without damaging them. Why are ESD table mats so important?
Sensitive devices such as computers, circuit boards or data storage media can be damaged by overvoltages. Overvoltages are caused by simple friction, especially in very dry room air. The voltage caused by the employee can be transferred to electrical devices. In this case, a discharge occurs, which can release several hundred or even thousands of volts. Dissipative mats have a voltage-resistant resistor that ensures a discharge. Ideally, an earthing cable is connected to the ESD table mat, which absorbs electrical voltages on the one hand and dissipates them via a special ESD earthing module on the other.
Our SafeGuard ESD table mats all comply with DIN EN 61340 and are also RoHS-compliant - "Restriction of (the use of certain) Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic Equipment". The aim of this EC directive is to protect human health and the environment by avoiding the use of six substances - heavy metals and brominated flame retardants/plasticisers. This directive is particularly important with regard to the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment in an EPA.
