Which ESD table mat is suitable for electronic workstations?
Dissipative ESD table mats with a defined surface resistance are used for electronic workstations. They enable the controlled dissipation of electrostatic charges and support the creation of standard-compliant EPA workstations in accordance with IEC 61340-5-1. Different formats and designs are available depending on the size of the workstation.
What is the difference between dissipative and conductive ESD table mats?
Dissipative desk mats dissipate electrostatic charges in a controlled and slower manner than conductive materials. This protects sensitive electronic components from uncontrolled discharges. Many ESD table mats consist of multi-layered materials with a dissipative surface and conductive underside.
How is an ESD desk mat correctly earthed?
Earthing is usually carried out using press studs, earthing cables and a central earthing point. For standard-compliant ESD workstations, the desk mat, wrist strap and other work equipment must be integrated into the earthing concept. The discharge capability should be checked regularly.
What properties are important for ESD table mats in the production environment?
Heat- and solder-resistant surfaces are particularly relevant in electronics production and service areas. Abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and a permanently flat position of the mat also play an important role. Anti-reflective surfaces also make it easier to work on sensitive assemblies.
What standards apply to ESD table mats?
ESD table mats are typically used and tested in accordance with IEC 61340-5-1 and EN 61340-2-3. Relevant factors include surface and volume resistance as well as safe integration into the overall ESD protection system of a workplace.
