What is ESD?

ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. This phenomenon occurs when there is a high electrical potential difference between two objects and this suddenly discharges in the form of a spark or breakdown. The resulting voltage pulses are extremely short - often lasting only a few microseconds - but can have enormous effects.

Especially in modern electronics production, ESD is an everyday but highly critical risk: even the smallest discharges, which are often not even perceptible to humans, can permanently damage sensitive components, shorten their service life or cause complete device failure.

This makes professional ESD management all the more important: targeted protective measures and high-quality ESD products can effectively prevent potential damage - for greater process reliability, reduced reject rates and more reliable product quality.

This means ESD - Electrostatic Discharge

We have all experienced ESD at some point. The most familiar sensation is feeling an electric shock when touching a door handle. However, many electrostatic discharges are below the threshold of human perception, but can be harmful to electronic components, for example.

How ESD occurs - a definition

ESD is caused by the exchange of charge between two bodies with different voltage potentials. This happens, for example, when two different materials are rubbed together or separated:

  • Walking across plastic floors or carpets
  • Friction on non-conductive clothing
  • Moving plastic containers
  • Unwinding of film (stretch film) or adhesive tape
  • Movement on conveyor belts

Where does ESD occur?

The best-known examples of electrostatic discharges are

  • Thunderstorms (lightning)
  • Discharge from a car door or large metal objects (radiators)
  • When taking off a synthetic jumper - protruding hair
  • Removing a packaging film - film sticks to the body
  • Rubbing a balloon against your hair - hair sticks out

ESD is an invisible danger!

There are many causes of electrostatic discharge, some of which cannot be seen or felt. For example, electrostatic charge can only be felt from a voltage of approx. 3000 volts. In comparison, voltages as low as 35 volts can completely destroy electronic components, such as a semiconductor module.

Why is ESD dangerous for electronic components?

Although completely harmless to humans, electrostatic discharge is now one of the biggest problems in electronics production. If this aspect is neglected, it can lead to serious quality problems that may only occur days, weeks or even months after the product has been delivered to the customer and can generate high costs in terms of:

  • Complaints
  • Repair and replacement costs
  • Loss of reputation
  • Loss of customers

To prevent damage to these sensitive components, it is important to introduce and consistently implement certain ESD protection measures in your company.
