Why is special ESD packaging required?
Normal packaging materials can build up electrostatic charges and damage sensitive electronics. ESD packaging prevents voltage build-up and protects components during storage, transport and shipping. Dissipative or shielding materials are used depending on the component type and transport requirements.
What are the differences between conductive and shielding ESD bags?
Dissipative bags reduce electrostatic voltages in a controlled manner and prevent charge build-up on the surface. Shielding bags also have a metallised protective layer that protects electronic components against external electrostatic fields. Shielding packaging is often used for sensitive semiconductors and assemblies.
What are the requirements for ESD-safe shipping of electronic components?
During shipping, components must be protected against both electrostatic discharge and mechanical stress. This is why shielding bags, conductive padding materials and ESD-compatible shipping containers are combined. In addition, packaging systems must fulfil the requirements of DIN EN 61340-5-3.
