Why is personnel earthing necessary in EPA areas?
People are one of the biggest sources of electrostatic charge in electronics production. Controlled personnel earthing safely dissipates voltages and prevents damage to sensitive components, which is particularly relevant for EPA areas. Typical systems consist of wrist straps, earthing cables and ESD shoes in conjunction with dissipative floor coverings.
When are wrist straps used?
Wrist straps are used at stationary workstations where open electronic assemblies are touched directly. They create a permanent electrical connection between the person and the earthing point. They are part of a standard-compliant ESD protection concept, particularly for assembly, testing and rework work.
Why do earthing systems need to be tested regularly?
Damaged cables, worn contacts or faulty connections can impair conductivity. Regular testing ensures that personal charges are reliably discharged and that the requirements of DIN EN 61340-5-1 are met.
