The word ionizer is the umbrella term for a technical station whose components include at least one ionizer. These devices help to keep the air free from electrostatic charge. Electrostatic discharge can be harmful to humans as well as to products and other electrical equipment. It also makes it easier to clean clean rooms or other sterile environments.
What is ionization?
Ionization is said to occur when an electrically neutral atom/molecule loses one or more electrons due to external influences. The result is that a positively charged atom/molecule is created. It becomes a cation. If, on the other hand, free electrons adhere to an electrically neutral particle, this is referred to as an intrinsically negative ion. In technical language, the particle is now called an anion.
How does an ionizer work?
In a normal application, the device generates negatively charged ions with the help of electrical voltage and discharge. Mostly these are negatively charged oxygen ions. When used in rooms with polluted air, the generated ions combine with the positively charged suspended particles. These can include pollen, dirt particles, fine dust and other pollutants. When ions combine with the pollutant particles, they become a larger and heavier molecule. The increase in weight has the effect of causing the newly formed molecules to quickly sink to the ground. They are then no longer present in the air we breathe and can be quickly and easily removed by regular cleaning. Within the ionizer, therefore, there are always positively and negatively charged ions that neutralize the opposing charges contained in the air stream. In this way, all charges are neutralized, even on equipment housings. This type of additional safety barrier also allows the production and use of insulating material within an ESD protection zone.
In most cases, this type of equipment is used when there is a high level of indoor air pollution. In addition to the ionizing bars, it also contains a fan, which is operated by a step switch. To support the recirculation operation, some models also have pre-filters. Depending on the size of the unit, different sizes of ionization tubes are used. The fan systems are used, for example, in offices, workplaces with heavy smoke, clean rooms or other sterile environments. Therefore, there are different variants, they can be purchased as a table model or as an overhead model in our webshop. The room air is sucked in by the device and passed through a (if available) pre-filter. Here possible solids are removed from the air. The cleaned air is now passed through the ionizing tubes and then blown ionized back into the room.
Compressed air system
This type of ionizer is often installed inside machines. In this way, all electronic charge inside the machine is neutralized. The ionizing nozzle is the most suitable for this work. Here the ionization is based on the HF-AC system (high frequency AC voltage). An important role is played by the high voltage transformer, which is located inside the nozzle.
